According to Wikipedia, Alexa is a California-based subsidiary company of Amazon.com that is known for its toolbar and website. Once installed, the toolbar collects data on browsing behavior which is transmitted to the website where it is stored and analyzed and is the basis for the company’s web traffic reporting.

Alexa ranks sites based on tracking information of users of its Alexa Toolbar for Internet Explorer and from integrated sidebars in Firefox and Chrome. Hence the page is only ranked between users who have these sidebars installed and may be biased if specific audience is reluctant to do this.

I knew all this but then also I had misconception that if I will achieve Alexa rank under 50K then I will start earning more. I am sure that there must be a lot of bloggers who must be having this thinking like mine. I know that bloggers get attracted towards stats of Alexa and as they come to know about great website, they browse its Alexa stats as I used to do. But I got shocked after knowing about famousbloggers.net as I read “List of 50+ Blogs That Accept Guest Posts” and curiously explored famousbloggers.net stats.Now you must be thinking what was the shocking thing in stats of famousbloggers.net.

I explored FamousBloggers and found its Alexa rank 11,839 and its Google’s PR is 3 Twitter followers 7254 and thousands of subscribers. Then I read the About page of FamousBloggers and guessed that they might be earning like anything because of a big team. Definately you can also guess or estimate their earnings if you will visit FamousBloggers.net.

But now the point which shocked me a lot was the small widget of whos.amung.us, present at the bottom page of FamousBloggers.net, which was showing online users present. I clicked on that to view overall history of online users. Click here[Link] to view online stats of FamousBloggers.net.

Conclusion

By comparing results you will find that for past 2 months my blog gets twice the number of visitors than FamousBloggers.net. By comparing maximum and average  user count by viewing the history of both MazaKaro.com[Link] and FamousBloggers.net[Link]

Now you must be thinking that I must be earning approximately twice of what FamousBloggers.net earns. But to quench your curiosity I want to tell that I hardly earn $200 per month from my blog.

Now the point is how Alexa determines traffic rank since it is obvious that my website gets more visitors than FamousBloggers.net so my website must have better traffic rank than FamousBloggers.net.

So I came to one conclusion that most of my website’s visitors are students and job seekers so they might not be having Alexa toolbar in their browser. But the visitors of FamousBloggers.net are bloggers, internet geeks or person who have Alexa toolbar in their browser.

Now the point is how FamousBloggers.net is able to earn more than me? The answer is FamousBloggers.net has targeted visitors who love technology and who are bloggers. They want to learn new things from their articles and to make blogs or to host blogs or to buy software which help them earn more, they never think of money and they buy those from affiliate advertisements of FamousBloggers.net because they want to make their blog more powerful.

Last month I started commenting on other blogger’s blogs and all those bloggers were having Alexa toolbar (Obviously Yes). Within that period of time I noticed a great change in my Alexa rank . My Alexa rank improved from 200K to 88K. But after that I stopped commenting on other blogs, so my Alexa rank got a huge loss. So I came to know that commenting on other’s blogs improves Alexa rank. But it is not compulsory that your earnings will also increase. Because last month I earned less than previous months. Check my Alexa graph below.

Here in above graph please have a look that peak of graph is on date near to August 23, but please have a look on whos.amung.us graph above and check that there is no huge change on date August 23. Now check the peak like Everest on August 13 where I had 264 users online but on date near to August 13, there is no peak in Alexa’s graph. So this got hence proved that Alexa never works on actual traffic, but works on traffic of users who contain Alexa toolbar in their browser.

I also came to know that you can not earn more from google Adsense if you are having fewer visitors. But you may earn like anything if you are putting affiliate advertisements if you have less but targeted traffic.

So if you are blogger then try to attract targeted traffic instead of huge traffic of un-targeted visitors (who are not having interest in your niche). For this you must build a list of targeted and interested visitors by maintaining an email list of interested people. Never go for quantity of contacts. Always go for contacts of interested people. Hope for the best in future and don’t lose your patience and keep blogging.

September 1st, 2010 saw one of the most memorable Apple events in the history of all such keynotes. Firstly because, for the first time Apple streamed the keynote live to viewers worldwide and secondly, as always Apple continued to surprise us by enhancing the already wonderful devices even more. Let’s take a brief look at everything that we gathered from today’s event.

We shall soon be doing detailed reviews of all the new hardware and apps released by Apple soon at our Technology Blog CallingAllGeeks.org. In the meantime, let’s look at the highlight of this fall’s event.

Live Stream

The owners of Macs and iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad only were able to watch the live stream as it uses the latest HTTP stream technology not yet supported on other platforms. There were no hiccups at all with the stream and it was one hell of an experience of the Apple fans among us. We realized that earlier when we followed live blogs for updates we were actually missing out on so much.

New Lineup of iPods Introduced – Shuffle, Nano, Touch

iPod Shuffle

Apple did really listen to our complaints here. While we liked voiceover we wanted the buttons from 2nd generation shuffle back. So now we have it. Priced at $49 for 2GB.

iPod Nano

It has become even smaller. It lost the touch wheel and got a new multi-touch screen. A clip like the Shuffle makes it wearable as well. FM Radio still exists but the camera is gone. Not that we mind. Apparently, the menu traversal and tracks and photo management was still just as easy. Priced at $149 for 8GB Model and $179 for 16Gb Model.

iPod Touch

Last but not the least, the master of all iPods. This masterpiece here has all the features of the iPhone 4 minus the phone and comes contract free. And guess what, it just got itself two cameras and facetime.

iOS 4.1 with Bug Fixes and new Features

Steve Jobs started the keynote with some information about its new stores opened worldwide, specially the 300th Store in London which is also the largest. He next went on to talk about forthcoming iOS 4.1 update and  its features which are as follows:

• Bug Fixes – With Proximity, Bluetooth
• iPhone 3G performance issues resolved
• HD Video Updates over WiFi
• TV Show Rentals
• Game Center
• High Dynamic Range (HDR) Photos - The most remarkable feature on iOS 4.1. The already terrific camera on iPhone 4 got even better. This is what we call making the best even better. In brief, the cam takes three photos, one normal and two under and over exposed. Combines all and stores two copies, one normal and one HDR enhanced. Benefit? Visible detail like Sky, shadow, dark areas etc. I’ll use some examples to illustrate. This will so eliminate the necessity to carry cameras at every instance we go out.

iOS 4.2 which is scheduled for November, will bring folders and multitasking to iPad.

Game center is Back

This is the feature we had seen on the beta release of iOS 4 and it had disappeared from the public release of iOS 4.0. The president of EPIC games showed a live demo of a multiplayer game. The experience was pretty vibrant and appealing. All this coming largely from the advanced A4 chip on new iPhone 4 and iPod Touch and the higher RAM capacity of 512 MB.

An interesting feature I noted here was the one about Auto Matching. If you don’t have a friend next to you to play a game with the app will automatically search for someone over the internet whose level of skill is almost the same as yours.

iTunes 10 with social network Ping released

iTunes 10 has received a major overhaul other than the graphic change of its icon/logo. Firstly, a social network called Ping is built right into iTunes. Steve Jobs calls it the social network meant for music needs. It’s structure is very much similar to that of Twitter and Facebook so it will not take much time for you to adapt to it. You can follow friends and artists here. We think sharing music taste and favorites and also finding new music is going to get a whole lot easier, with this approach.

Other iTunes updates include:

• Rent HD shows for just 99 cents

New Apple TV released

If you  have checked out the Apple TV before you’re in for a lot of surprise here. It’s totally changed. It’s around one-fourth the size of the previous device. So small it fits on your palm. No storage anymore. Apple wants you to rent it every time and thinks that it will still turn out to be cheaper. It will connect to your wifi network and also stream your Mac or PC’s content to the TV, which is great. Has HDMI port built-in. Priced at $99 and tv shows coming at $0.99 soon, it does sound like a good deal to us. Check out more features in the screenshot.

Concluding Musical Performance by Coldplay

Steve Jobs invited seven times Grammy award winner Chris Martin of Coldplay to perform after he was done with all the Apple-ish surprises he had up his sleeve. Most of you have heard of the English band Coldplay (Genre: Alternative Rock) and their popular numbers, Yellow and Viva la vida which Chris performed solo. Yesterday we posted about our monthly income report and now it’s time for monthly traffic report which shows how well we are doing with traffic and exposure. My monthly traffic report give me a comparison chart and if traffic is sinking I can quickly see what’s wrong and how can I get my traffic back. This month I expected Shoutmeloud traffic to be little low because we stopped publishing breaking tech news and all those are shifted to CallingAllgeeks. But somehow our traffic is increased from last time and good to see that most of the traffic is still coming from search engine.

Here goes our August 2010 traffic report:

So most of my traffic is still coming from search engines and one thing which you notice if you will compare to my last month report that my facebook referral has increased and Twitter referral is still the same. Just for the info I stopped Auto-Tweeting and Auto-posting on Twitter and facebook respectively. This was a good thing as I tweet selective post and add my comments while tweeting.

Since we are slowly removing the tech part from Shoutmeloud and including social and blogging part more, I believe we will see more traffic from referring sites in future. But I will still love to see Google sharing the maximum percentage of traffic.

Another great thing which happened this month is Shoutmeloud alexa rank is below 5K this month which was almost 5.4K last month. I’m finding it hard to wait and see Shoutmeloud getting into top 1K alexa rank milestone. Probably this will take an year, but I won’t mind waiting for an year.

Link Building plays an important role in Search Engine Optimization, especially in Off-Page Optimization. There are many link building techniques that helps to get backlinks to our site. Note that If you want to rank well in search engines, you don’t need just backlinks – you need quality backlinks.

It is very common that many people make mistakes while doing link building which can get you good ranking as well as negative rankings (in some cases). So below are the common link building mistakes that you had to take care of.

Linking to sites with bad reputation:

Never ever link to a site that had bad reputation i.e., spam site, duplicate content site (auto-blogging, illegal sites, po-rn sites. Remember that search engines certainly won’t love those sites and yours too if you link to them.

Buying/Selling Links:

Don’t try to buy links from other sites for getting backlinks. Sometimes, you may get banned from Search Engines for doing so. SEs only love natural links.

Getting Nofollow Links:

Nofollow links are in no way useful for your website to rank in search engines like Google. However, if you want to rank top in Bing, then you can continue to build no-follow links. Else if you are targeting only for Google, its mere a waste of time. Despite, spend a little more time to get atleast few dofollow (quality) incoming links.

Link Building (Low PR):

In Similar to nofollow links, the links from low PageRank sites aren’t the best for your site. Instead of wasting time in building thousands of backlinks from low PR sites, try building few backlinks from High PR sites which will save both your time and help your site rank better.

Note: Links with PR of 0 and 1 are basically very low, PR of 2 and 3 is more or less acceptable, and PR of 4 and above is just fine.

Getting Backlinks from Irrelevant Niche sites:

An example of a quality backlink is a dofollow link from a high PR site within your niche (same topic). So try to get incoming links from same niche instead of irrelevant sites which adds very less weightage to your PR.

Links without your Targeted keywords in Anchor text:

The anchor text plays a major role. If your targeted keyword was used as anchor text instead of your name or your site name, then it will help you rank well for that keyword.

Note: Don’t use words such as “click here,” “check this” etc…

Backlink Spamming:

Don’t try to build lot of links at a time as your site may seem a link farm in the eyes of the Search Engines. This may even make the SEs to remove your site from indexing i.e.., Ban your website from being indexed. So never try to do link building in a hurry. Remember “Rome was not built-in a day”. Slow and steady wins the race.

Backlink Building is a very tough yet effective way to have good rankings in top search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing.
